The U.S. Army’s 41st Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) is the first unit to fully use the new M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). The upgrade brings faster mobility, better protection, and the ability to fire next-generation munitions, boosting the Army’s firepower in Europe.
The brigade is based in Germany. It received the systems in October 2024. They tested them during Exercise Dynamic Front 25, which is a live-fire event with NATO allies. The improved systems are now fully operational, making the 41st FAB the most modernized artillery unit in the region.
What’s New About the M270A2 Rocket System?
The M270A2 is an upgrade of the older A1 version, adding:
- Speed and Mobility: Improved engines and controls help units move faster.
- Enhanced Protection: A larger, armored cab keeps soldiers safer.
- New Technology: Updated software improves firing speed and mission processing.
- Advanced Munitions: The system can use the Army’s future precision-guided missiles.
“It’s faster, more mobile, and keeps our soldiers safer,” said Capt. Kendal Peter, commander of Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment. “These upgrades make us more effective on the battlefield.”
Supporting NATO and Regional Security
The new system isn’t just for the U.S. military. NATO allies like Germany and the United Kingdom will also adopt the M270A2, improving cooperation in joint missions.
During Dynamic Front 25, U.S. soldiers trained with NATO partners to test the rocket system’s long-range capabilities. Staff Sgt. Zariah Fernandez, a platoon sergeant with the brigade, highlighted the importance of these collaborations. “We’ve worked closely with our NATO allies, and this system only strengthens our joint firepower,” she said.
The upgrades are part of a $194 million project awarded to Lockheed Martin to modernize the MLRS fleet. The work is spread across facilities in Arkansas and Texas, with completion expected by 2027.

The 41st FAB is the only field artillery brigade permanently stationed in Europe. It plays a key role in NATO’s defense strategy. Its new equipment ensures the brigade is ready for any mission or conflict.
“The M270A2 is a game-changer,” Peter said. “Our teams are ready to rise to any challenge.”
The modernization also sends a clear signal about the U.S. commitment to Europe’s security, especially at a time of increased tensions in the region.
