Stratolaunch Secures $24.7M Agreement for Hypersonic Flight Test

Stratolaunch has been awarded a $24.7 million agreement by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to support national security objectives through an advanced Stratolaunch hypersonic flight test campaign.

This aims to enhance missile defense capabilities against emerging hypersonic threats.

Expansion of Talon-A Flight Capabilities

As part of this initiative, Stratolaunch will modify its Spirit of Mojave 747 launch platform. This will extend Talon-A’s flight capabilities beyond the U.S. western coast to various global locations. These modifications will enable the launch of hypersonic test vehicles from any airport capable of accommodating a 747. This will provide unprecedented operational flexibility. It will also ensure scalability.

Key Test Campaign Timeline

This campaign is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025. This initiative will play a crucial role in assessing missile defense technologies. It will also advance these technologies. This addresses the increasing challenge posed by hypersonic weapons.

Stratolaunch’s Commitment to National Security

Dr. Zachary Krevor, President and CEO of Stratolaunch, emphasized the importance of this mission in reinforcing national security:

“This mission enhances our national security posture, enabling rapid testing of new missile defense architectures designed to defend against hypersonic threats.”

With this agreement, Stratolaunch solidifies its position as a key enabler of advanced hypersonic test capabilities. This ensures the United States remains at the forefront of defense innovation.

Addressing the Stratolaunch Hypersonic Flight Test Threat Landscape

Hypersonic weapons present significant challenges due to their high speed, maneuverability, and unpredictable flight paths. Michael Kryzak, MDA Director of Systems, Targets, and Countermeasures, expressed confidence in the partnership with Stratolaunch:

“We are excited to partner with Stratolaunch to test our defensive architecture against these potential threats.”

Stratolaunch Hypersonic Flight Test Project Execution and Funding

This agreement is fully funded through fiscal year 2024 research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) funds. This funding is under the MDA Innovation, Science & Technology Broad Agency Announcement (HQ0860-23-S-0001). The primary modification work on the Spirit of Mojave 747 will be conducted at Stratolaunch’s headquarters in Mojave, California.

Conclusion

The Stratolaunch hypersonic flight test marks a significant step forward in missile defense advancements. By leveraging innovative aerospace technology, this project will help the U.S. stay ahead of evolving global threats and maintain its leadership in national security.
