Kratos Gets $1.45 Bln Contract for Hypersonic Testing

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has been awarded the MACH-TB 2.0 contract valued at $1.45 billion over five years. This marks the largest contract in the company’s history. The contract supports the Department of Defense’s hypersonic technology initiative, aiming to streamline testing processes and accelerate development timelines.

The Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonic Test Bed (MACH-TB) program is a cornerstone of the U.S. National Hypersonic Initiative 2.0. The Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) manages it. This center is part of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD (R&E)). MACH-TB 2.0 is designed to bridge the gap between ground tests and full-scale hypersonic flight systems.

George Rumford, Director of TRMC, emphasized the program’s importance, stating:
“MACH-TB is an essential tool to accelerate science and technology experiments into next-generation, leap-ahead hypersonic capabilities for our nation.”

Role of Kratos in MACH-TB 2.0

Kratos will lead Task Area 1, focusing on systems engineering, integration, and testing (SEIT). The company will provide subscale and full-scale air launch services. It aims to increase the frequency and affordability of hypersonic flight tests.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Systems engineering and integration.
  • Assembly and testing of hypersonic systems.
  • Mission planning and execution.
  • Launch services.

Kratos is supported by a consortium of subcontractors. This includes Leidos, Rocket Lab, and Purdue University. They ensure comprehensive expertise for the project.

Michael Johns, Senior Vice President of Kratos SRE, stated that the nation is at a critical point. There is a need for rapid and affordable hypersonic flight testing. The MACH-TB program is filling that need.

Advancing Hypersonic Capabilities

The MACH-TB program is part of a broader national strategy to maintain U.S. superiority in hypersonic technologies. The program increases test frequency. This aims to reduce development risks. It also accelerates the deployment of critical systems to the warfighter.

Kratos has demonstrated leadership in hypersonic systems with its Erinyes Hypersonic Flyer and Zeus Solid Rocket Motors. These successes position the company as a key player in hypersonic testing and innovation.

Dave Carter, President of Kratos Defense and Rocket Support Services Division, noted:
“With the MACH-TB 2.0 program, we bring unmatched expertise to rapidly field hypersonic systems.”

Implications for National Security of Kratos MACH-TB 2.0 Contract

The MACH-TB 2.0 contract highlights the growing emphasis on hypersonic technology in national defense. It underscores the need for cost-effective, scalable solutions to address emerging threats.

Kratos CEO Eric DeMarco remarked:
“This milestone reflects our commitment. We deliver affordable, mission-critical solutions. These solutions meet the evolving needs of the warfighter.”

Conclusion

Kratos’ $1.45B MACH-TB 2.0 contract represents a significant step forward for U.S. hypersonic capabilities. The program aims to ensure the US remains at the forefront of defense innovation. It enhances testing efficiency and reduces risks.

As hypersonic technologies evolve, MACH-TB 2.0 will play a vital role in shaping the future of national security.
